Class Descriptions

Beginning Drawing

The Beginning Drawing class is a foundational course designed to teach the essential skills and techniques necessary for students to succeed in more advanced drawing and painting classes. This class is intended for students with little to no experience in drawing or those who need to refine their basic skills. For those with extensive experience in drawing and painting, the class may be waived (depending on a portfolio review or instructor approval), but it is essential for those looking to strengthen their fundamentals before progressing to more complex media like pastels or acrylic/oil painting.

This course emphasizes building confidence in observational drawing and mastering the technical basics of line, shape, form, value, and composition. It also encourages creativity and introduces students to the importance of drawing as a means of visual communication.

Discover the basics of line, shape, shading, and perspective. Learn how to sketch confidently and bring your ideas to life on paper.

Students will progress through the 8-week session from basics to still life drawings in pencil and charcoal.

Beginning Pastels

This Beginning Pastels class is designed for students who already have a foundation in beginning drawing (i.e., understanding basic drawing principles like line, shape, form, value, and composition) and are ready to apply those skills to the medium of pastels. Pastels offer unique possibilities, combining the precision of drawing with the vibrant color possibilities of painting. In this course, students will learn to use soft pastels to create their first complete pastel artworks while building on their drawing skills and knowledge.

Intermediate/Advanced Pastels

This intermediate to advanced pastel class is designed for students who already have a basic understanding of pastel techniques and are looking to refine their skills, explore more advanced methods, and push their creative boundaries. The class is somewhat self-paced, allowing students to work through a structured curriculum at their own speed while also offering flexibility for individual exploration and artistic growth.
